POSITION SUMMARY:             

This part time position reports to the Biogas Plant Manager or Senior Biogas Plant Operator. The Biogas Plant Operator will assist project personnel in the safe and efficient operation of one or more renewable fuels facilities and all associated gas upgrading technologies.  This position may also assist with or be responsible for technical assistance or the operation and maintenance of digesters and digester pretreatment processes. This position will gain progressively responsible experience operating and maintaining wastewater treatment and/or biogas plant process equipment. 

 

This position is expected to be a part of an on-call rotation for the plant.  When on call the individual is expected to respond within one hour (be on site or handle remotely, if applicable) of being notified, to the situation.  While on call the individual must not be under the influence of drugs or alcohol in the event that they are needed to be respond to a situation.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for understanding and employing instructions and procedures from O & M manuals to process equipment.
  • Under supervision will assist with the troubleshoot process issues and diagnose mechanical faults.
    • Be responsible for minor equipment repairs.
    • May be required to monitor one or more facilities remotely and respond to after-hours problems.
  • Use technology/software (SCADA, PLC, Control Systems) to operate pumps, compressors, chillers, valves, sampling/testing devices, and biogas upgrading equipment.
  • Participates in collecting samples and conducting lab analysis or shipping samples to a commercial laboratory.
  • Under supervision will assess and develop any needed corrective actions of systems and processes. 
  • Records document results clearly, completely, and concisely.
  • Must record, interpret, and apply:
    • Meter/gauge readings
    • Test results
  • Identify areas for improvement and seeks creative solutions.
  • Maintains operator and equipment logbooks.
  • Communicates process performance to other staff, especially to supervisor.
  • Assist supervisor and other staff in the use of a Computerized Maintenance Management System.
  • Performs and closes out maintenance work orders and confirms spare parts inventory and condition

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Knowledge of general safety protocols/procedures, such as use and calibration of personal gas monitors, lock-out-tag-out and tools, materials, and equipment used in the operating, maintaining, and repairing of all equipment.
  • Possess or gain basic knowledge of pump and compressor operations, SCADA and PLC systems, and CMMS work order development and completion.
  • Able to interpret construction plans, P&ID’s, and O&M Manuals
  • Ability and aptitude to interpret and understand plans and specifications
  • Exhibits initiative, responsibility, flexibility, and leadership
  • Team oriented and ability to get along with others
  • Good math skills (ability to: add, subtract, multiply, divide)
  • Knowledge in MS Office and technical software
  • Must demonstrate significant attention to detail and complete or assign facility cleaning tasks to maintain all facilities in an exceptional manner.
  • Ability to pass safety and certification classes (including First Aid and CPR) and exhibit a strong safety-oriented mentality
  • Effectively communicate with managers, engineers, craft workers and contract personnel.  
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to embrace new technologies and processes
  • Able to quickly respond to rapidly changing condition
  • Able to read and understand mechanical and electrical drawings

 

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent required. 2-year technical degree preferred. 

 

Experience:

0 – 3 years experience in related field preferred. This may include chemical, oil/gas, utility, or power industry experience. Knowledge of plant instrumentation, analyzers, pumps, compressors, chillers, membranes preferred.  In addition, would prefer experience in Anaerobic Digestion. 

 

Travel Expectations:

Must be able to travel in-state and out-of-state on occasion, which usually would consist of field work, visiting other company locations, attending seminars or business meetings. Travel may be 5-10% of the time depending on projects. 

 

Working Conditions:

Physical

  • Mobility to stand, sit, walk, stoop, twist, bend, climb ladders, crawl, balance, kneel, crouch, reach overhead, lift, and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Perform other strenuous work.
  • Must possess vision enough to read standard size text, distinguish colors, and at distances over 20 feet.
  • Requires the ability to speak and hear well enough to communicate clearly and understandably in person to individuals and groups.
  • Possess manual dexterity enough to use hands, arms and shoulders repetitively and without limitation to range and motion to operate a keyboard, tools, and specialized equipment.
  • May be required to drive work vehicles.
  • Must be clean shaven when required to wear respiratory protection equipment.

 

Environmental and Working Conditions

  • Positions are assigned to the project with work that involves exposure to industrial machinery, chemicals, and other contagious environments.
  • May work in confined spaces.
  • May be subjected to moving mechanical parts or vehicles, electrical currents, fumes, gases, oils, and intense noise levels.
  • This position can involve working outside in typical outside weather conditions including hot, cold, and inclement weather conditions.
  • Requires the use and wear of safety equipment, including safety glasses and footwear, hard hats and face shields, protective clothing and gloves, respirator, safety harness, personal gas monitor, and hearing protection. May be required to work any shifts, which includes nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • May be required to work overtime.

Ability to Wear Personnel Protective Equipment such as but not limited to Hard Hat, Safety Glasses, Goggles, Hearing Protection, Safety Shoes/Boots, Respirators, personal gas monitors, Dust Masks, chemical suits.
