POSITION SUMMARY:          

We are seeking to hire an experienced Public Involvement Specialist to join our Marketing team in Kansas. This employee would work with marketing and client services teams on various companywide public outreach efforts for our private and public clients, as well as supporting the company’s own marketing and communications. 

 

This position would require the ability to communicate well with clients, multitask, pay attention to detail and to be organized. The role would entail coordinating events such as open houses, public information and planning meetings, groundbreakings and ribbon cuttings. It would also involve the creation and coordination of public information communications such as project websites, social media, emails, surveys, fliers, mailings, photography, press releases and presentations.

 

In addition to Public Involvement activities, the position would require some company-wide communications and marketing activities.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Implement public outreach strategies.
  • Attend public involvement events and interact with stakeholders.
  • Assist in planning public meetings and hearings. Develop and prepare mailing lists, notices, public meeting presentations, talking points, exhibits and documentation.
  • Create, edit and produce public involvement documents and online content for emails, websites and social media.
  • Participate in meetings with technical staff, clients and elected officials.
  • Facilitate and organize virtual and in-person open houses, workshops, public hearings, neighborhood meetings, groundbreakings, ribbon cuttings and other public events.
  • Work under the direction of multiple project managers.
  • Create surveys and analyze responses.
  • Collect and respond to public comments.
  • Assist in getting additional public information projects through proposals and interviews.
  • Prepare estimates to include public engagement costs, schedule, collateral, etc.
  • Be involved in the International Association of Public Participation (IAP2) and obtain and maintain IAP2 certification.
  • Utilize writing, event coordination, presentation and design skills to assist with company marketing and communication efforts.
  • Other projects, tasks and duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills.
  • Must be flexible to changes in work assignments on short notice and/or daily as changes occur in project needs.
  • Ability to work beyond standard business hours.
  • Effective problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Exhibits initiative, responsibility, flexibility and leadership.
  • Good time management skills with ability to handle complex deadline-driven workload.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team successfully.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Proficiency in website and email publication platforms, such as Wix, SquareSpace, StoryMaps, etc.
  • Familiar with survey tools, such as MetroQuest and SurveyMonkey.
  • A working knowledge of graphic design programs Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator is preferred.
  • Willingness to embrace new technology and processes including learning other software programs.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, marketing, journalism or a related field required.

 

Experience:

5 years plus of experience in leading public or community relations projects, experience in public involvement, or as a public information officer is a plus.

Travel Expectations:

Must be able to travel in-state and out-of-state on occasion, which usually would consist of visiting other company locations, attending seminars or business meetings. Minimum travel is 10% of the time depending on projects.
